‘An Inscribed Brick in a Church Wall’ is the name of a campaign organised by the Foundation for the Restoration of Christian Cultural Monuments, of which ExpoForum is one of the founders.

14 Sep 2011 The first stone was laid in the foundation of the Church of the Smolensk Mother of God Icon
Today, a ceremony was held to lay the foundation stone of the Church of the Smolensk Mother of God Icon. The church will be reconstructed based on drawings and sketches made by the Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi who built the original church in Greater Pulkovo village in the 18th century by order of Catherine II. The church, however, was destroyed during World War II.

10 Aug 2011 A Prayer Mass Was Held to Honor the Smolensk Mother of God Icon
On 10 August a prayer mass was held on the foundation of the destroyed Church of the Smolensk Mother of God Icon. The mass was held on the icon’s feast day, which coincides with the soon-to-begin construction of a new church.

1 Jul 2011 A general contractor was chosen to rebuild the church
On July 1 the general contractor to rebuild the church was chosen. OOO SK Dalpiterstroy has extensive experience in the design and construction of churches in Shushary, as well as in Ilyicheva village where it designed the Kazan Mother of God Church. It also took part in the reconstruction of a church house near the Our Lady of Fyodor Church, as well as assisted in restoring the St. Catherine Cathedral in Pushkin.

15 Jun 2011 Project for new church to be examined
Today, plans for the construction of the Smolensk Mother of God Cathedral, on the territory of the ExpoForum international congress and exhibition center, were delivered to the State Examination Center. Approval within 90 days after delivery of the project allows the company to obtain a permit and begin construction.

29 Mar 2011 Father Daniel was appointed pastor of the cathedral
On March 29, the Metropolitan Vladimir of St. Petersburg and Ladoga signed a decree appointing Fr Daniel Vasilevski pastor of the Smolensk Mother of God Cathedral. Also by order of the Metropolitan, the house church of St Mary Magdalene on the Vasilevsky Island of St. Petersburg was officially elevated to the level of parish church.

12 Jul 2010 Creation of a charitable foundation was approved
On July 12, 2010 the founders of the charitable Foundation for the Restoration of Christian Cultural Monuments held their first general meeting. They ratified the creation of the foundation and its registration with the state, and also approved the fund’s charter, created a board of trustees, and named a director.

10 Feb 2010 Design assignment for a new church approved
On February 10, 2010 Monsignor Gennady Zverev, head of the Tsarskoselsky diocese and chief priest at St. Sophia’s Cathedral approved the design assignment for rebuilding the parish of the Church of the Smolensk Mother of God Icon. The entire church complex will accommodate about 350 to 400 parishioners, and will include a church and a Sunday school. Dalpiterstroi Construction Company Ltd will oversee the design work, and will put forth two different options of the project design. Construction is planned to begin in the third quarter of 2010, and is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2011.
